The Alumnus of the Year is one of several awards of distinction bestowed by Jesuit High School Alumni Association for special recognition of exemplary service to the school and community. See the others - the Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Commencement Awards - listed below, as well as the Jesuit Hall of Fame, which includes non-alumni.

2021-22 Alumnus of the Year - Al Dato '60

Since his graduation in 1960, Al Dato has been a lifelong advocate of Jesuit, donating his time, talent, and treasure, to supporting his alma mater and the Jesuit High School Alumni Association.

Throughout the years, Al has served Jesuit in many leadership capacities, including as a key member of the Steering Committee for the ‘Honoring Our Traditions’ capital campaign (2004-2006), the Jesuit Alumni Council (2004 – present), and the 1899 Bequest Society. He is also long-time annual supporter of the school’s Fr. Richard G. Hartnett, S.J. Memorial Golf Classic and Gaudiosa fundraising gala. Most recently, he and his wife, Josephine, sponsored the beautiful ‘Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto’ on campus, as well as provided the life-sized Fontanini Nativity Crèche, which is displayed annually outside of the Chapel of the Holy Cross to enhance our spiritual identity.

After graduating from Jesuit, Al attended the University of South Florida where he was a member of the charter class. In 1964 he joined the U.S. Army Reserve and served in the 53rd Infantry Brigade. He was stationed in Ft. Jackson, S.C. and honorably discharged in 1970.

Professionally, Al is a respected commercial retail and residential developer. He has been a member of the Florida Licensed Real Estate Associate for more than 50 years, and is a member of The International Council of Shopping Centers. Active in the community, Al is loyal parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He also serves as a member of the Friends of St. Joseph for the betterment of St. Joseph Catholic School and Church in West Tampa. He has supported dozens of other charities in the Tampa Bay area, including the Boys and Girls Club, Cristo Rey Tampa Salesian High School, St. Peter Claver Catholic School, Villa La Paz, Children’s Board of Hillsborough County (Children’s Home), Knights of Columbus, Sports Club of Tampa, and the Italian Club of Tampa.

He is happily married to his wife of nearly 40 years, Josephine Greco Dato.

For his many years of outstanding leadership and dedicated support to the school and our Tampa Bay community, Jesuit High School is proud to recognize Al Dato ’60 as the 2021-2022 Alumnus of the Year!

Distinguished Alumnus Award

The most prestigious award in Jesuit High School history, this award is given to the alumnus who has dedicated his entire life to serving God’s will. In the history of the school, which was founded in 1899, there are just two recipients of this award:

Fr. Richard G. Hartnett, S.J. ’30
Fr. Hartnett dedicated over six decades of service to Jesuit High School as a student, priest, teacher, alumni chaplain and archivist.
Dr. Anthony Lazzara ’60
Since 1984, Dr. Lazzara has devoted his life and work to Villa La Paz, a medical clinic he founded and operates for destitute and desperately ill children near Lima, Peru.

Men for Others Memorial and Commencement Awards

The Memorial and Commencement Awards

Each year at commencement four graduating seniors who have been extraordinary in some capacity are presented Jesuit's highest awards. The Men for Others Memorial, located near the Jesuit Memorial Bell Tower, honors all Men for Others Commencement Award recipients, with their names etched on the brick wall. The Memorial also features a waterfall, which represents the Lord’s generosity through the actions of man. The etched names represent not only the leaders of individual classes, but also the expectations placed upon them to continue as leaders in their community.
The four "Men for Others" awards:
  • The Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Award: Given to the student who excels as a "Man for Others" through distinguished achievement in community service.
  • The Fr. Larion J. Elliot, S.J. Award: This award for spiritual leadership is given to the student who manifests dedication and commitment to Christ and the Church through the example of his Christian life.
  • The Bro. Joseph P. Gavan, S.J. Award: Given to the student who has been outstanding in generosity and dependability in service to the school community.
  • The Fr. Charles J. Lashley, S.J. Award: The highest honor Jesuit High School confers upon a graduating senior, it is given to the graduate who best exemplifies outstanding characteristics of leadership of the student body.
