Wrestling

Jesuit wrestling is one of the premier programs in the state and a national presence, annually competing successfully in major tournaments outside of Florida. In recent years under head coach Sal Basile, the Tigers have captured four State Championships – the State Duals in 2020 and 2025, and the IBT State Tournament in 2022 (pictured) and 2024 (pictured below) – while earning an incredible 21 individual State titles from 2019-2025. The Tigers enter the 2025-26 season having won 17 of the past 19 IBT District titles, and all nine District Duals since its implementation in 2017-18.

2025 - Fourth State Title
Jesuit captured its 4th wrestling State title in 2025, winning the State Duals for the second time. The Tigers vanquished an elite gauntlet in three duals at Osceola High School to earn the crown, knocking off No. 1 Lake Gibson, No. 4 Somerset Academy, and No. 3 Charlotte in succession.

In the 1 vs. 2 showdown against Lake Gibson, pins by Anthony Rametta '26 (285) and Brock Glover '27 (113) catapulted Jesuit to a 40-21 win. In the semifinal vs. the defending Class 1A State Champ, Pembroke Pines Somerset Academy, the Tigers trailed 22-9 but were sparked by Zach Leto '28's last-second triumph at 106 that launched Jesuit to 6 victories in the final 7 matches en route to a nailbiting 34-28 win. Xavier Albo '25 (144), needing a victory in the final match to secure the title, won 13-0. Albo had previously defeated Lake Gibson's No. 1-ranked 144-pound wrestler, Jaiden Oliver.

In the championship dual v. Charlotte, the Tigers rocketed out of the gate with 5 straight wins, including pins by K.J. Vazquez '27 (157), Draven McCall '25 (165), Robert Bossowski '26 (190), and Marvin Mendez '26 (215). Jesuit clinched the 59-13 win a few matches before Mason Basile '27 (150) officially closed it out with a MD. Also winning matches for the Tigers at the State Duals were Malachi Ortiz '25, Reid Yakes '27, John Alvarado '28, Jayden Bowles '25, and Aidan Garrity '25. Winning all three their matches were McCall, Vazquez, Albo, Bowles, Yakes, and Glover.

The Tigers followed up the State Duals title with a runner-up result at the IBT State Championship. McCall captured his 3rd straight individual State title, and four Tigers were State runners-up. McCall signed to wrestle collegiately with Army West Point, where he joins Braden Basile '22, who also won three indvidual State titles at Jesuit.

2024 - IBT State Champions
The Tigers dominated the IBT State Tournament in the spring of 2024 with a historic performance as a school-record 10 Tigers reached the podium. A trio of State Champions led the way in 2024: Ortiz (113 pounds), McCall (150), and Brandon Cody '24 (165). For McCall, it was his second State crown after winning at 138 in 2023. Also placing in 2024 were State runners-up Roman Lermer '24 (120) and Vazquez (157); the 3rd place Albo (132), Bowles (138), and Mason Basile (144); 4th place Yakes (126); and 7th place Chancellor Haber '24 (175).

2018-22 - The Championship Foundation
The 2021-22 season culminated with one of the greatest days in Jesuit wrestling history as a school-record five Tigers earned individual State titles en route to Jesuit's first team IBT State Championship. Tom Crook '22 finished off the most successful career in Jesuit wrestling annals with his fourth State crown, becoming the first Tiger to win four State titles and receive the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award; Braden Basile '22 earned his third State title after previously winning State as a freshman and sophomore; Jack Crook '22 won his second, and Sergio Desiante '22 and Lermer won their first. All four senior State Champions signed to wrestle in Division I: Tom Crook at Virginia Tech, Basile at Army West Point, Jack Crook at Harvard, and Desiante at Tennessee-Chattanooga (he later transferred to Virginia Tech). Lermer graduated two years later in 2024 and signed with the U.S. Air Force Academy.

In 2020-21, the Tigers had five State finalists and won two individual State titles, by twin brothers Tom Crook (138 pounds) and Jack Crook (145). Both Crooks were nationally ranked in the Top 10, and Tom Crook completed his junior year with his third straight unbeaten season. He became Jesuit's first 3-time State Champion (winning his fourth the next year) and the first Tiger to win Florida's Mr. Wrestling honor for all classifications.

In 2019-20, Jesuit wrestling claimed its first team State title with a victory at the State Duals. In the Class 2A Duals Quarterfinal, the Tigers defeated two-time defending champion Lake Gibson 29-27, winning the final three matches for a dramatic come-from-behind triumph. Jesuit then blasted Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas 71-6 in the final. The Tigers also had four individual State Champions in 2019-20, equaling the school record set the year before (and broken with five in 2022), and finished as Class 2A State Tournament runner-up. That season, Ethan Basile '20 (145), Tom Crook (126), Braden Basile (120), and Kai Owen (106) all captured their second of back-to-back State titles, with Crook going 62-0 and Ethan Basile (Northern Iowa signee) earning Class 2A Mr. Wrestling honors while finishing his career with a 176-2 record.

See below a listing of all State placers in Jesuit wrestling history, including the 33 individual State Championships earned by 21 different Tigers wrestlers through the 2024-25 season.
