Track & Field

Jesuit track & field has a long and storied tradition of success – including a 2003 State Championship – which has continued under head coach Andy Wood '92. In Wood's 14 seasons at the helm, the Tigers have finished either first or second in the District every year and captured five Region titles, including back-to-back Region crowns in 2022 & '23.  The Tigers also have claimed back to back Tampa Bay Private School Championships. In 2023, Donovan Terry '24 (pictured at right), Andre Gilbert '23, and Justin Thurman '25 had a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 meters, Terry won the 400 and anchored the victorious 4x400, Gilbert won the long jump (21-5), Devin Stevens '23 the 800 (1:57.94), Gabe Alvarado-Borjas '23 the 400 hurdles (58.32), and the 4x100 relay of Angel Ocampo '24, Willy Suarez '24, Gilbert, and Thurman also was victorious at the TB Private School Championships. At the Region Meet, individual event winners included Terry in the 400, Stevens in the 800, the 4x400 of Terry, Stevens, Jarriett Buie '23, and Kai Gibron '24, and Oskar Louk '23 was runner -up in the pole vault.

Among the top returning Tigers in 2024 are Terry, who owns the school record in the 100 (10.63) and 200 (21.39) meters as well the 4x100 (41.67); Thurman, who also is a part of the record-setting 4x100; Suarez, who is coming off of a record-setting football season; distance runners Max Purvis '26 and Lucas Rupp '26; pole vaulter Charlie Iler '26; and shot put/discus throwers Griffin More '24, Tucker Witte '25, and Robby Dyer '25.

Among many alumni who have gone on to participate in college track & field are Dante Newberg '15, who became one of the ACC's top decathletes at Florida State, State Champion pole vaulter Nick Catchur '14 at the University of Miami, 800-meter runner Lawson McLeod '22 at Columbia University, and Stevens at Arkansas-Little Rock.
