Track & Field: Tampa Bay Champs

Jesuit track & field captured 1st place at the Tampa Bay Private School Championships on Tuesday (April 5) at Berkeley Prep.

The meet included all of the top private schools from Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk, Manatee, Pasco, and Hernando counties. The Tigers, led by head coach Andy Wood '92, scored 139 points to outdistance runner-up Calvary Christian (93 points) and 18 other schools for the title.

The meet featured numerous outstanding individual performances. Event winners included Donovan Terry '24 in the 100 in 10.76 seconds, which is just 0.06 off the school record. Terry led a 1-3-4 finish for Jesuit in the 100, with Andre Gilbert '23 (10.94) taking 3rd and Ajani Edwards '22 in 4th (11.08).

Gilbert and Edwards scored in three other events for Jesuit, running the 3rd (Edwards) and 4th (Gilbert) legs of the Tigers' winning 4x100 relay team (43.49), and taking 6th (Gilbert) and 7th (Edwards) in the 200. Gilbert also placed 2nd in the long jump (20-8).

In addition to his 100 title, Terry anchored the winning 4x400 relay, and he placed second in the 400 (49.53), with Ayden Lee '23 (52.67) placing 5th in the 400.

Lawson McLeod '22 and Devin Stevens '23, who are pictured on the homepage, went 1-2 in the 800, both running personal bests times of 1:56.38 for McLeod and 1:57.93 for Stevens. McLeod also placed 4th in the 1600 meters in 4:32.06.

Oscar Louk '23 won the pole vault with a leap of 12-4, leading 1-3-4-5 finish for Jesuit in the event with Ryan Overstreet '22 (10-10), Ty James '22 (10-10), and Chancellor Haber '24 (10-4) in the 3-4-5 spots, respectively. In the 300 hurdles, Robert Plummer '24 placed 5th in 44.25.

Jesuit also won two relays, the 4x100 (Joquez Smith '23, Troy Bowles '23, Edwards and Gilbert), and, closing out the meet in most dramatic fashion, the 4x400 team of Lee, Kai Gibron '24, Stevens, and Terry edged out Calvary Christian at the line, with the teams recording the exact same time of 3:28.38 but Jesuit declared the winner. The Tigers also placed 3rd in the 4x800 relay.

In the field events, Liam Conroy '22 set a school record in the javelin, a new event in just its 3rd year. Conroy threw the javelin 157-6 feet into a headwind to set a new Jesuit record and place 2nd overall. Kevin Doherty '23 (132-3) placed 7th for the Tigers in the javelin, and Johnny Kilkelly '22 placed 6th in the shot put (40-5).

Next up for the Tigers is the District Meet at Berkeley Prep on April 28.
