Tigers slay Dragons

Another week, another win for the unbeaten Jesuit High School football team.

The Tigers made it a perfect 12-for-12 this season on Friday (Nov. 20) with a 38-7 win over Jefferson in a Class 5A second round playoff game at Corral Memorial Stadium.

The teams had played a closely contested 21-14 game at Jefferson in September, but this one was all Jesuit from the get-go. Malik Davis ’17 broke a 74-yard touchdown run behind some phenomenal blocking to score on the opening possession, and when Travell Harris ’17 took a handoff and dashed 86 yards up the sideline (homepage photo) for a score with 12 minutes remaining in the game, it was 38-0 Tigers.

The Jesuit defense allowed a 53-yard pass on Jefferson’s first play and then stymied the Dragons the rest of the way. Jefferson missed a field goal attempt on its opening drive and wouldn’t come close to scoring again until a running clock was in effect in the fourth quarter.

Danny Boon ’17 passed for 186 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown to tight end Nick Rausch ’16, to complement Davis, who ran for 190 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.

Despite the spectacular long runs by Davis and Harris, Rey Riveros ’16 may have had the most exhilarating run of the game. Normally a wide receiver, Riveros took a direct snap and bounced off numerous tacklers for a 20-yard score late in the first quarter to make it 14-0.

Standouts were everywhere on defense. Parker Looney ’16, Zack Quilty ’16, Thomas Mooney ’16, Braden Gilby ’18, Anthony Nelson ’18, Mike Swenson ‘17, Dalton Garrett ’17, and Nick Terrana ’18 were among those making plays in the backfield, and Harris, Rodney Higdon ’17, Mayson Atkinson ’16 and Jason Stokes ‘16 locked down the secondary.

Next Friday (Nov. 27) Jesuit hosts Fort Myers Dunbar at 7:30pm in the Region Final.
