The 2022-23 School Year Begins!

The 2022-23 School Year Begins!

Jesuit High School opened the 2022-23 school year during the week of August 8, with Freshman Orientation on Tuesday, Schola Brevis on Wednesday, and then the first two full days of school on Thursday and Friday (Aug. 11 and 12).

Schola Brevis included Convocation presentations from principal Mike Scicchitano and president Fr. Richard C. Hermes, S.J., and the first full day began with grade-level presentations from director of student activities Austin Freeman '02 and assistant principal for discipline Brian Greenfield

The week began Monday (Aug. 8) with all Jesuit students coming to campus for their school portrait and the freshmen receiving their iPads, and it was highlighted by the State Championship celebration Wednesday (Aug. 10) for the Jesuit baseball team.

The student body filled the Tiger Palace for the mid-day baseball ceremony at the conclusion of Schola Brevis on Aug. 10. The State Championship victory on May 21 occurred right after the 2021-22 school year had ended, so recognition in front of their peers had to wait until this week. The players and coaches, led by head coach Miguel Menendez, received their championship rings, and afterward, everyone headed outside for cake and photos with the newly updated baseball championship monument.

Next week, Aug. 15-19, is Welcome Week, which will feature lunchtime games and activities sponsored by Student Council. Also on the calendar next week is all-school Mass on Monday (Aug. 15), the Solemnity of the Assumption, and the annual Clubs Open House on Thursday (Aug. 18) morning. Jesuit's more-than 40 clubs will set up displays throughout campus, and students can sign up for the clubs of their choice.

The start of the school year concludes an active summer on and off campus. Throughout June and July on Himes Ave., Jesuit students participated in Summer Enrichment and Summer Courses, and were counselors at Sports Summer Camps and with Jesuit Summer Bridge. Loyola Lane was revamped and widened this summer to include a bricked drop-off lane, and construction continued on the beautiful, stately new Antinori Center for the Arts, which is slated to open later this school year.

Dozens of Jesuit students participated in each of the mission trips to South Dakota, Colombia, and Jasper, Ga.; the Leadership Retreat in Wyoming and Utah; as well as the two-week European Pilgrimage, "In the Footsteps of St. Ignatius. "
