Tennis Titles

Younger and less experienced than almost every team he has had, with several losses during the regular season, there was no reason for Jesuit High School tennis coach Joe Curtis to expect a District title this spring.

Yet the Tigers did it again, dominating on Monday and Tuesday (March 28 and 29) at Hillsborough Community College to give Curtis his 21st District crown in 22 seasons at Jesuit.

"Great effort from every player," said Curtis, whose team easily outdistanced Robinson, Tampa Catholic, and several other schools. "They really played well. I'm very proud of them."

All five singles players – three sophomores, a freshman, and a senior – reached the final, and Jimmy Emslie ’18 (pictured on the homepage) claimed the automatic berth to the State Tournament with the victory at No. 1 singles.

Gantt Meredith ’16, the lone senior, won at No. 3 singles, and Christian Gonzmart ’18 prevailed at No. 4. Also, No. 2 Gunther Mosesmann ’18 and No. 5 Ramon Martinez ’19 both were runners-up.

Jesuit also swept the doubles, with Emslie-Meredith claiming the No. 1 title, and Mosesmann-Martinez winning at No. 2.

The Tigers advance to a Region Semifinal match Tuesday (April 5). The Region Final is April 7. The State Tournament is April 11-12 in Casselberry, near Orlando. Last year Jesuit won the District and Region titles and placed third in the State.
