Swimming: Region Champions!

Swimming: Region Champions!

Over a decade of dominance continued on Saturday (Nov. 7), as the Jesuit swimming and diving team won the Region championship for the 12th consecutive season.

The Tigers swam impressively at St. Petersburg's North Shore Aquatic Complex, defeating 29 other schools and outdistancing second-place Cape Coral by a score of 569 to 312. The victory gives Jesuit an automatic spot at the Class 2A State Meet on Saturday (Nov. 14) at the Sailfish Splash Waterpark in Stuart, where head coach Bill Shaffer's team will look to capture its third title in the past four years.

A week earlier, on Halloween, the Tigers had claimed their 23rd straight District title, and at Saturday's Region Meet more swimmers (14) qualified for the State Meet than ever before in program history.

Jesuit was led by Nick Shaffer '21 and Sam Prabhakaran '21, with Shaffer claiming individual crowns in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke while Prabhakaran took the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Liam Schindler '23 won the 100 breaststroke, while Logan Lange '23 secured individual honors as the Region's top diver.

Jesuit also swept the relays, winning the 200 IM (Shaffer, Schindler, Jordan Jansen '23, Prabhakaran), 200 freestyle (Schindler, Geoff Trieloff '21, Armando Destrade '23, Ezra Moros '22), and 400 freestyle (Prabhakaran, Jansen, Erick Magalhaes '23, Shaffer).

In addition to the individual event champions, Jesuit's State qualifiers also include Jansen, Trieloff, Destrade, Moros, Magalhaes, Ryan Finster '22, Sasha Fiola '23, Brayden Hohman '23, Aidan Clements '24, and Dominic Rozance '22.

Shaffer, Prabhakaran and Trieloff are part of a decorated senior class that is seeking for a third State championship in four years. The program broke through for its first State title in 2017 and repeated in 2018.
