Swimming, Golf Win District

The Jesuit High School swimming and golf teams kicked off the fall sports playoff season by capturing their respective District titles in impressive fashion.

Jesuit swimming was dominant in its District Meet on Saturday (Oct. 21) at the Academy of the Holy Names. The Tigers followed up a 7-0 dual meet season by winning their 21st straight District crown. Jesuit's 657 points was 257 better than the runner-up, as the Tigers won every event. Winners included:

  • Brendan Driscoll '19 (200 and 500 Free)
  • John Jansen '18 (200 IM)
  • Sam Sands '18 (50 and 100 Free)
  • Diego Perez '18 (Diving)
  • Tyler Carreja '19 (100 Fly)
  • Nick Shaffer '21 (100 Back)
  • Chris Jennings '18 (100 Breast)
  • 200 Medley Relay (Carreja, Jennings, Robbie Shaffer '19, Alex Caceres '19)
  • 200 Free Relay (Jennings, Caceres, Josh Talbot '18, Sands)
  • 400 Free Relay (Jansen, Driscoll, Nick Shaffer, Sands)

Jesuit golf was also dominant at its District Tournament. On Oct. 16 at Temple Terrace Golf Club, Grayson Maddox '19 fired a 1-under 71 to lead the Tigers to victory and claim the individual title, and he was followed closely by Max White '19 (73), Connor Murphy '19 (75), Jimmy Paradise '20 (77) and Alex Siffert '19 (78). This was Jesuit's 12th consecutive District golf crown, and the team score of 296 was Jesuit's best in District competition in 17 years.

In the coming days, Jesuit bowling and cross country will compete in their respective District events, and golf and swimming will try to earn Region titles.

Bowling's District Tournament is Tuesday (Oct. 24). Bowling does not have a Region Tournament, so the Tigers, led by head coach Ted Beil, will be trying to finish in the Top 2 at District and advance directly to the State Tournament for the 6th consecutive year.

Cross Country, led by head coach Jim Ranieri, will be looking for a strong result at its District Meet on Thursday (Oct. 26) at King High School. John Robbins '18 is seeking back-to-back individual District titles and has been in top form leading a young team this season.

The golf team, led by head coach Nico Hohman '07, was runner-up at the Region Tournament last year. The Tigers will try to recapture the Region title on Monday (Oct. 23) at Mangrove Bay Golf Course in St. Petersburg. Swimming, led by head coach Bill Shaffer, will try for its 9th straight Region title on Saturday (Oct. 28) at the North Shore pool in St. Petersburg.

Jesuit's 5th fall sports team, football, has two more District games, at Middleton (Thur. Oct. 26) and at Jefferson (hurricane postponed and rescheduled for Mon. Oct. 30). If the Tigers make the playoffs, their first playoff game would be Fri. Nov. 10.
