Swimming Dynasty

The streaks just keep growing for Jesuit swimming.

Friday (Nov. 1) in St. Petersburg, the Tigers extended their Region title streak to 16 years.

A week earlier, they extended the District title streak to 28 years.

And this week they’ll try to extend their Top 5 streak at the State Meet to 12 years.

The program’s legacy of success under head coach Bill Shaffer also includes three State Championships, as well as a commitment to be Men for Others. Every year, the Tigers participate in the annual Spike & Splash cancer fundraiser with the Academy of the Holy Names, which has generated more than $100,000 through the years.

And last week, the Tigers raised $5,163 through the team’s annual head-shaving event. Each year at this time at Shaffer's house, the swimming team, looking to streamline its performance for the playoffs, takes out the clippers and loses the extra drag.

The Tigers used the hair removal occasion to benefit the CailinStrong Foundation, in honor and memory of former AHN swimmer Cailin Cannella, who lost her courageous battle to osteosarcoma in 2017. On Nov. 2 at the girls swimming District Meet, a check for $5,163 made out to the CailinStrong Foundation was presented to Ashlin Cannella, the sister of Cailin and a 2024 AHN graduate.

In the pool Friday at the North Shore Aquatic Complex for the Region Meet, the Tigers excelled, outscoring runner-up Freedom 451.50 to 267. Henry Neely ’26 won the 100 and 200 freestyle and was among several Tigers who took part in one of the team’s winning relays, along with Bruno Borowiec ’26, Fisher Sadlowski ’27, David Dieffenthaller ’27, Noah Kreye ’27, and Trey Davis ’28. Joining them in representing Jesuit at the State Meet will be Troy Carter ’28, Lewis Mattson ’28, Max Miller ’28, Tiernan Clements ’27, Wilson Marcum ’27, Fiero Tiozzo ’26, and Jack Rozance ’25.

The State Meet is Friday (Nov. 8) at Florida Aquatics Swimming Training (FAST) in Ocala, where the Tigers will try for that 12th straight Top 5 State finish.
