Summer at Jesuit

Summer at Jesuit
Soccer and basketball camps launch a busy summer on campus

Jesuit High School has launched a full slate of summer events, including sports summer camps, the Summer Bridge program, and Summer Enrichment.

This week (June 8-12) marked the first of eight weeks of Jesuit sports camps. Jesuit soccer head coach Eric Sims led dozens of youths through four days of soccer training on Jesuit’s brand new, state of-the-art turf field, and basketball coach Neal Goldman has guided a packed session through a week of hoops inside the Tiger Palace. Please see the photo slideshows below from the first week of sports camps.

There are many more sports camps to come throughout June and July, including additional sessions in soccer and basketball along with baseball, football, lacrosse, and wrestling. Please click here for more information and to register.

Summer Bridge begins its fifth year at Jesuit next week (June 15). Summer Bridge is a comprehensive five-week program designed for local boys entering 6-8th grade this fall who are conscientious students at or above grade level. Most Summer Bridge students come from Hillsborough County public schools, and the program is offered at a steeply discounted cost.

From 8:00am to Noon daily over the five weeks, Summer Bridge consists of four daily disciplines: mathematics, grammar, reading, and critical thinking. Jesuit’s Director of Community Service, Michael Miller ’09, is the Summer Bridge principal, and Jesuit math teacher Paula Collazo is the director. Also on the Summer Bridge staff are Jesuit teachers April Bombka (math), Jonathan Barlaan ’07 (critical thinking), and Rania Saade (grammar/reading).

Summer Bridge also consists of electives such as P.E.; specialty sessions in cooking, art, music, robotics, and videography; and field trips.

Also beginning Monday (June 15) is Summer Enrichment, a program for incoming freshmen designed to bolster the fundamental skills needed for success at Jesuit. A few dozen members of the Class of 2019 will get a jump on their high school academic careers through Summer Enrichment by upgrading critical English, reading, math, and study skills in preparation for the fall.

Summer Enrichment is led by Jesuit math department head Molly Biebel and English department head Austin Freeman ’02, along with English teacher Greg Malafronte ’05
