Suarez, Campbell win County Awards

Suarez, Campbell win County Awards

At a special ceremony in downtown Tampa on Wednesday (Jan. 24) with family, coaches, and supporters on hand, two Jesuit seniors earned special athletic recognition from Hillsborough County.

First, Drew Campbell '24 received the Casey Award, which honors the Outstanding Boys Golfer in Hillsborough County.

Moments later, Willy Suarez '24 received the Guy Toph Award as Hillsborough County's Most Outstanding Football Player.

Campbell led the Tigers to District and Region championships on the links and was individual runner-up in the Class 2A State Tournament. He averaged more than a stroke under par per round this season.

Campbell was at his best when it mattered most, surging from off the pace at State to force a playoff for the individual championship before finishing 2nd and taking the silver medal. The week before at the Region Tournament, with the Tigers trailing in the team standings by one stroke coming down to the final hole, Campbell drained an eagle putt to vault Jesuit to the dramatic come-from-behind victory and Region title.

Suarez had a stunning, record-shattering season for the Tigers on the gridiron, helping Jesuit to a 10-3 record which included a 9-game winning streak highlighted by a record 66 points in a victory over TC as well as wins over Tampa Bay Tech, Armwood, and Bishop Verot. The connection between QB Will Griffin '26 and Suarez created highlights throughout the season.

Suarez scored 20 total touchdowns and set school records for receiving yards in a season (1,232 yards on 65 catches with 13 receiving TDs) and kickoff return average (42.5). He is the 5th Jesuit Tiger to win the "Hillsborough Heisman," following Skipper Peek '76, Al Lopez III '82, Gary Godsey '99, and Malik Davis '17.
