Jesuit's Latin Club captures 10 awards at a Regional Forum

Inexperience proved to be little hindrance to Jesuit High School’s Latin Club on Feb. 14 in a Regional Forum event at Robinson High School.

In what was the first Latin competition for all of the club members, the Tigers, led by club president Alex Backman ’15 and moderator Nick Werner, claimed 10 awards, including three first-place awards.

John Cullaro ’18 earned first place in Derivatives 1; Gabriel Brown ’17 in Advanced Derivatives; and George Robbins ’18 in History of the Roman Empire.

Jasper Creman ’16 placed second and Joshua Barlaan ’16 finished fifth in Advanced Grammar and Vocabulary; Michael Lennartz ’18 took third and Garrett Ballard ’18 placed fifth in Mythology; Charles Butler ’16 finished third in Greek Derivatives; and Backman earned fifth in Advanced Latin Literature.

The team also did well in Certamen, a Quiz Bowl-type of event. A Jesuit squad consisting of four freshmen – Robbins, Cullaro, Ballard, and Lennartz – placed in the top three of both levels I and II.

The next event for the Latin Club is tentatively scheduled for the Florida State Roman Forum in April.
