Sacraments of Initiation

Sacraments of Initiation

Jesuit High School president Fr. Richard C. Hermes, S.J. celebrated a special Mass in the Chapel of the Holy Cross on Friday (June 19), during which three students were baptized – Rory Ramirez '21, Caleb Williams '22, and Gavin Young '23 – and four were received into full communion with the Catholic Church, Dylan Callaghan '21, Bennett Lee '20, Sam Lennon '20, and Lawson McLeod '22.

Each student was accompanied by his sponsor: Ramirez by Jesuit theology teacher David Mammola, Williams by assistant director of campus ministry Matthew Kuizon, Young by his grandmother Deborah Jones, Callaghan by Christian Hamilton '21, Lee by Camden Minacci '20, Lennon by theology teacher Brian Greenfield, and McLeod by his godmother Priscilla Towner.

Jesuit received special permission to celebrate these sacraments from the Diocese of St. Petersburg, and from the pastor of the parish in which Jesuit is located, Fr. Dan Kayajan of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Initially scheduled for the final all-school Mass of the school year in May, the special Mass was delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Family and friends were there to support the seven students receiving sacraments, and they were presented with gifts afterward from the campus ministry department.

Since 2010, a total of 47 students have received sacraments at Jesuit, including eight who will be students at the school in 2020-21: Callaghan, McLeod, Ramirez, Williams, and Young, plus Nicholas Wolf '22, Alex Thompson '21, and Anthony Tom '21.
