Robot Masters
Jesuit Robotics had a record-setting FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Regional Tournament during April 5 weekend at the University of Miami.
The Tigers, a.k.a. Team 3164, made Jesuit history by placing 4th after pool play qualifying at a major FRC Regional, their highest qualifying result ever!
As the 4th place qualifier among 44 teams after the 10 rounds of pool play, the Tigers were an alliance captain for the playoffs for just the second time in team's 15-year history.
"It was joyous," said Jesuit engineering teacher and first-year Robotics Club moderator Kyle Fennesy. "We were tremendously excited. All the hours and hard work paying off."
In the 8-team playoffs, Jesuit's alliance won its first match but ultimately was eliminated and placed 4th overall out of the 44 teams from six countries – just missing out on qualifying for the World Championships in Houston. Founded in 2010, Jesuit Robotics has reached the FIRST World Championships one time, after placing second at a regional event in 2018 as an alliance partner.
The Tigers had closed the Tallahassee Regional in March as one of the hottest teams there. Led by seniors Ethan Wall, Hendrix Bromberg, Oliver Hund, Christian Theobald, Kelley Martin, and Daniel Odio, along with next year's team captain, Tristan Kelly '26, the Tigers spent the next two weeks in the Engineering and Robotics Lab perfecting their robot so that all phases were on point against elite competition in Miami.
"Our autonomous was working amazingly – that's Ethan Wall," Fennesy said. "Our drive team got much better. We calibrated the software and code better. The climber was locked in – we were the best climbing team there.
"We left it on the field and did the best we could."
