Pre-Medical Club Studies COVID-19

Jesuit High School’s COVID-19 Task Force has been working with the school throughout the summer to establish a comprehensive plan for re-opening this fall.

Jesuit’s Pre-Medical Club is getting ready, too. Eight members of the club, along with moderator Dr. Louis Faso, recently joined Jesuit COVID-19 Task Force member Dr. Lucy Guerra, P ’21, ’21 on a Zoom conference to discuss COVID-19.

Also on the Zoom meeting were Dr. Frederick Slone, professor of medicine at USF Morsani College of Medicine, and three medical residents from USF Morsani. Among the topics they reviewed were how to find the correct mask, how to prevent coronavirus infection, and how to correctly execute an at-home, self-testing kit.

Pre-Medical Club president Dawson Jessee ’21 and Dr. Guerra, who is the associate program director of medicine at USF Morsani College of Medicine, organized the Zoom meeting. They were joined by Pre-Medical Club members Kevin Beck-Perez ’21, Joseph Koebbe ’21, Frankie Machado ’21, James Moroney ’21, Jacob Tagle ’21, Ashton Buchanan ’22, and Andre Botero ’23.

One item in particular that resonated with Jessee was a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report about how masks can be effective. The report analyzed a situation in Missouri where two hairstylists served 139 clients while unknowingly infected with the virus. According to the CDC's report, both the stylists and patrons wore masks, and no clients are known to have contracted the virus.

All of the students involved in the meeting look forward to sharing their expanded COVID-19 knowledge with their Jesuit brothers.

“I guarantee that every single person who attended the meeting learned something they didn't know before,” Jessee said.
