Opening Day

The first full day of the 2015-16 school year at Jesuit High School began in St. Anthony’s Chapel on Friday (Aug. 14), where school president Fr. Richard C. Hermes, S.J. celebrated St. Maximilian Kolbe at Mass.

In his homily, Fr. Hermes told the story of how Kolbe, a Franciscan Friar and native of Poland, lived an extraordinary life in the early 20^th century. He died a martyr at Auschwitz, the Nazi Germany concentration camp, in 1941. Kolbe was canonized in 1982 by Pope John Paul II, and declared a martyr of charity.

Following Mass, the students embarked on their classes in math, the arts, science, social studies, theology, English, and more.
