Jesuit Wins FHSAA All-Sports Award

Jesuit Wins FHSAA All-Sports Award

Jesuit High School's athletics program did it again. For the second straight year, the Tigers are No. 1 among all sports programs in all classifications in Florida.

Under the leadership of athletic director Terry Rupp '84, Jesuit repeated as champion in the Florida High School Athletic Association's All-Sports Award rankings, a.k.a. the FHSAA Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup. The Tigers led the way not only in Class 5A, but over every school in Florida, tallying 101 points in the FHSAA's scoring system to win by 21.5 points over runner-up Lake Highland Prep (see charts below).

The Tigers did this despite missing out on a potential windfall of points in the spring sports. With the spring seasons cancelled midway by the coronavirus outbreak, the FHSAA did not award all-sports points in baseball, tennis, lacrosse, and track & field, four sports in which Jesuit was performing at a very high level.

The Tigers annually rank at or near the very top among all FHSAA boys sports programs in Florida. The past seven years (since 2013-14), Jesuit has finished No. 1 three times statewide and never below 6th. Among Jesuit's 12 FHSAA sports programs over the past seven years, the Tigers have claimed District titles in 62 of 80 opportunities, a 77% clip.

And as it does every year in the all-sports standings, Jesuit also finished No. 1 in its classification (5A), No. 1 among all Tampa Bay-area schools (Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties), and No. 1 among all local private schools. The Tigers' 101 points more than doubled the point total of the next-best school locally, Steinbrenner with 49.75.

When boys and girls point totals were added together, Jesuit finished 4th in all classes in Florida, behind Orlando Lake Highland Prep, Jacksonville Bolles, and Ponte Vedra, despite having no girls teams.

Leading the way for Jesuit in 2019-20 were the State champion soccer (head coach Eric Sims '95, pictured on the homepage) and wrestling (Sal Basile) teams. Individually, four Jesuit wrestlers earned their second straight State championships in 2019-20, Ethan Basile '20, Kai Owen '22, Braden Basile '22, and Tom Crook '22.

Also faring very well for the Tigers in the FHSAA playoffs this past school year were the District and Region champion swimming (Bill Shaffer) and football (Matt Thompson) teams; District champion and Region runner-up golf (David Simmons); District champion basketball (Neal Goldman - 9th straight District title); and Region runner-up cross country (Jim Ranieri).

Among the spring sports teams whose seasons were cut short, baseball (Miguel Menendez) was unbeaten and ranked No 1 in the nation by multiple media outlets; tennis (Joe Curtis) also was unbeaten and had returned its entire lineup from the 2019 State runners-up; lacrosse (Charlie Cummins) had reached the Region Final the past two seasons; and track & field (Andy Wood '92) had multiple elite performers, including the state's No. 1 ranked pole vaulter, Anson Rowe '20.

See below the FHSAA All-Sports Award rankings in 2019-20 for boys sports programs: 1. in all classifications; 2. among Class 5A schools; 3. among Tampa Bay area private schools (Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco); and 4. among all Tampa Bay area schools.
