Jesuit defeats 14-1 Wharton after placing 3rd at National Jesuit Classic


The Jesuit basketball team had a whirlwind of success during Christmas break.

First the Tigers won the Nike Gulfshore Invitational at Jesuit on Dec. 19-20, knocking off Freedom - which was 12-2 entering the championship game - 52-46 for the title, behind 19 points from Christian Whidden '15. In the locker room a couple of hours before the final, the team presented several local migrant children with Christmas gifts.

Right after Christmas, Jesuit traveled to the Washington, D.C. area and placed third at the prestgious Fr. George National Jesuit Christmas Classic from Dec. 27-29. The Tigers knocked off highly regarded Jesuit New Orleans in the opening round and then Canisius (Buffalo, N.Y.) to claim 3rd place, dropping only the semifinal to the host school, Georgetown Prep. Daniel Darst '15 was named to the All-Tournament team

Saturday (Jan. 3) Jesuit returned to Tampa to face 14-1 Wharton in a neutral-site game at Berkeley Prep. The Tigers handed the Wildcats, ranked No. 5 in the state in Class 8A, their second defeat of the season, holding them to 12 second-half points en route to a 46-31 victory.

This week Jesuit (11-5) plays a key District game at Robinson (10-4) on Tuesday (Jan. 6), and the Tigers host Tampa Catholic (11-5) on Friday (Jan. 9) at 7:00pm in a game that will be broadcast live on Bright House Sports Network.
