A Record-Setting Hartnett

A group of people in colorful, patterned clothing are standing on a well-manicured golf course, with lush greenery and buildings visible in the background.

The 47th annual Fr. Richard G. Hartnett, S.J. Memorial Golf Classic on Monday (Oct. 6) at Carrollwood Country Club was a record-setting success, raising $115,000 for Jesuit's financial aid program!

Some 136 golfers enjoyed the camaraderie and spirit of Jesuit High School and beautiful course conditions all while smashing the event's fundraising record – please view below the list of sponsors who helped make this possible!

The Hartnett Golf Classic is Tampa's longest continuously operated charity golf event, and it has grown by leaps and bounds in its capacity to support Jesuit's financial aid program. Last year's Hartnett set a then-record $76,700, and this year's eclipsed that mark by nearly $40,000, via sponsorships, player registration, and raffle sales.

As it has for years, the 1905 Family of Restaurants and Richard Gonzmart ’71 served as the event's Premier Tournament Sponsor. Joining them for the second straight year at the highest sponsorship level was ReliaQuest and Renee and Brian Murphy, P ’27, the tournament's Platinum Corporate Sponsor.

As always, the Hartnett was supported by amazing Jesuit Mothers' Club volunteers, led once again by Hartnett chair Laura-Elizabeth Ware, P ’25, ’28, and Monday morning the alumni and supporters came together for brotherhood, kinship, and fabulous golf on CCC's pristine Pine and Cypress courses.

Jesuit's alumni director, Kathy Pedrero, along with the numerous Mothers' Club volunteers, made the event operate smoothly and set the tone for a wonderful day.

The money raised by the Hartnett Classic directly benefits the 1/3rd of Jesuit students who receive financial assistance each year. Numerous other loyal sponsors generously supported the event, please see below the full list – thank you sponsors!

The winning team Monday was the foursome of Joseph Younes, P ’28, Joe Chiellini, P ’28, Michael DeGenova, P ’26, and Ian Walters.

More than 100 great photos from the event can be accessed and downloaded on Google Drive, click here. Also the official team photo of each foursome is available at this link.

Thank you to all who helped make the 47th annual Fr. Richard G. Hartnett, S.J. Memorial Golf Classic a spectacular success, we look forward to seeing you next fall!

Hartnett Golf Classic history

Fr. Richard G. Hartnett, S.J. dedicated 62 years of his life to Jesuit High School. He was a graduate of the Class of 1930, a Jesuit priest, teacher, alumni chaplain, school archivist, and historian. In 1979, Jesuit's Alumni Association established the annual Fr. Richard G. Hartnett, S.J. Golf Classic to raise money for the school's financial aid program. The tournament's original organizers included James J. "Buddy" Clark 38, Manuel Corral 37, Victor DiMaio 42, Sam Ferlita 38, and Sal Urso 44. Their intent was to bring together Jesuit alumni and friends to benefit the Fr. Hartnett Endowment Fund, and to honor Fr. Hartnett's lifelong commitment and service to Jesuit High School. The Classic has raised more than $1 million over the 40+ years in support of Jesuit's financial aid program. Fr. Hartnett passed away in 2004, but his legacy and impact on the school lives on with the annual Fr. Richard G. Hartnett, S.J. Memorial Golf Classic, the Tampa Bay area's longest continuously running charity golf event.
