Jesuit High School’s Latin Club, under the direction of moderator Nick Werner, placed 3rd overall in the Senior Academic Division and took home numerous top individual awards at the Region 7 Latin Forum competition Feb. 4 at Robinson High School.

The first-place finishers for the Tigers were Andrew Hanna ’19 in Reading Comprehension 2, John Robbins ’18 in Reading Comprehension Advanced, John Cullaro ’18 in Derivatives Advanced, and Grayson Maddox ’19 in Geography 2.

Also faring very well and earning 2nd-place results were: Tyler Petitt ’19 in Derivatives Advanced, Trace Nuss ’19 in History of the Empire 2, Kegan Lovell ’19 in Vocabulary 2, Karol Piedad ’19 in Grammar 2, and Daniel Villavicencio ’18 in two categories, Vocabulary Advanced and Grammar Advanced.

Jesuit’s Certamen 2 (Roman Quiz Bowl) team also placed second, led by team members Piedad, Hanna, Nuss, and Lovell.

Jesuit’s two other Certamen teams both placed 3rd: Certamen 1 (Jeremiah Jeffrey ’20, Anson Rowe ’20, and Trent Alexander ’20) and Certamen Advanced (Robbins, Villavicencio, George Robbins ’18, and Tristan Cole ’19).

All totaled, Jesuit brought home 4 trophies, 4 gold medals, 5 silvers, and 5 bronzes in the 15-school competition. Additional high-placing individual finishers for Jesuit were: Cole (3rd) and Petitt (4th) in Grammar Advanced; Kegan Lovell (3rd) in Grammar 2; George Robbins (5th) in History of the Republic Advanced; Jeffrey (4th) in History of the Empire; Michael Lennartz ’18 (4th) in Mythology Advanced; John Robbins (3rd) and Cullaro (4th) in Mottoes, Abbreviations, and Quotes Advanced; Rowe (3rd) in Vocabulary 1; and Boyd Merrill ’19 (3rd) and Piedad (5th) in Vocabulary 2.

The Region 7 competition was one of eight such Regional Latin Forums contested recently in Florida. Next, the club will participate in the State competition April 6-8 in Orlando.
