Jesuit Speech and Debate earns eight high honors at a Dec. 6 competition

Jesuit Speech and Debate had a sensational showing Saturday (Dec. 6) at the Catholic League competition at Pine View School near Sarasota, as eight Tigers collected awards and top honors at the 13-school event.

Leading the way were Alex Fiore ’16, who placed 1st in Congress while competing against several National qualifying participants, and Sylvester Kwo ’15, who earned a gavel for being elected the Presiding Officer by his peers.

In Policy Debate, Jesuit swept the highest honors, claiming 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.  The team of Jackson Moffett ’16 and Gantt Meredith ’16 placed 1st, Cullen Finley ’17 and Lincoln Nichter ’17 took 2nd, and Michael Lee ’16 and Roberto Roches ’17 earned 3rd.

This was the first time in more than three years that any school swept the top three positions in policy debate in any tournament in the District.

Jesuit also fared well at two other events recently. At a Congress-only National competition Nov. 22 at Bradenton Southeast, six team members competed against 300 other high school students. Fiore placed 3rd, and Moffett won a gavel and was elected Presiding Officer by his peers.

On Nov. 15, the team earned numerous honors in competition at Newsome High School. The Policy duo of Moffett and Meredith won 1st place in team debate, Finley and Nichter placed 2nd while Lee and Roches finished 4th. In Congress, Fiore earned 3rd place trophy, Kwo won a gavel for being elected Presiding Officer by his peers, and Jack Henry Nouss ’17 placed 5th in his house.

Post-season events for Jesuit Speech and Debate begin with State qualifying on January 31.
