College Signees: Mayberry, Jones

With family, friends, and teammates on hand in the President's Board Room, Trevor Mayberry '20 (U.S. Naval Academy) and Christian Jones '20 (Florida A&M) signed to play football at the college of their choice during a special ceremony Wednesday (Feb. 5) at Jesuit.
Jesuit president Fr. Richard C. Hermes, S.J. and assistant athletic director Zach Prado '13 first addressed the signees, encouraging them to continue to strive for excellence on the field and in the classroom as leaders among their peers in college. Then Prado gave the instruction, and they signed their National Letter of Intent.
Jones, a wide receiver, and Mayberry, an offensive tackle, were part of a senior class that helped Jesuit reach the State Semifinal the past two seasons (and four of the past five). They also helped the Tigers stretch the winning streak vs. Tampa Catholic to 20 straight.
The Tigers finished 11-3 this fall under head coach Matt Thompson, with Mayberry leading an offensive line that paved the way for 190 rushing yards per game. Jones was a big-play specialist, averaging 23.3 yards per reception including a 65-yard TD.
Mayberry and Jones join six other Jesuit football players from the Class of 2020 who signed during the December signing period: Connor McLaughlin (Stanford University), Jonathan Odom (University of Florida), Lex Capitano (Furman University) and a trio of Army West Point signees – Brett Gerena, Raleigh Oxendine, and Spencer Williams
This was the third of four college signing ceremonies scheduled at Jesuit this school year. The final one will take place April 15. Each year, 20-30 Jesuit student-athletes sign to participate in college athletics.
