Chess Champions


Jesuit High School's chess team put the moves on the competition this weekend, capturing first place at the Tampa Bay Rated Fall Chess Tournament.

On Saturday (Oct. 12) at the Hillsborough Academy of Math and Science, Jesuit's Ralph Augustin '23, Savian Graham '23, Gilbert Morgan '23, Malik Shipley '23, Jackson Shembekar '21, and Javaris Williams '23 placed 1st overall in the team standings, outscoring 12 other schools.

In the U800 division, Shembekar, placed 1st and Shipley was 2nd. Graham recorded the highest finish in U1500, and Augustin was the highest in U1200. More than 150 players from a dozen schools, including both middle schools and high schools, competed at the event.

The chess team is part of the Strategy Guild Club at Jesuit, under the direction of moderator Nick Werner. The team next will compete at a tournament in Orlando in December, though it might first compete at a November event.
