Athletic Champions

Athletic Champions

Once again in 2023-24, Jesuit athletics is No. 1 in the state of Florida!

The Florida High School Athletic Association released its annual all-sports rankings, a.k.a. The Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards, and for the 3rd consecutive year, Jesuit ranks No. 1 among all boys sports programs in all classifications.

The Tigers, in Class 5A, scored 134.75 points in the FHSAA scoring system to finish ahead of perennial all-sports power Jacksonville Bolles (4A, 111 points), which was runner-up for the 2nd straight year, with Miami Columbus placing 3rd (7A, 95.25 points).

It is the 5th time in 6 years Jesuit has been No. 1 overall among all boys sports programs in Florida, and the Tigers have never finished lower than 6th overall in the state over the past 11 years under athletic director Terry Rupp '84.

Finishing first in all classifications also means the Tigers were No. 1 in Class 5A in 2023-24 as well as in the Tampa Bay area (Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando Counties) among all local schools, public and private. Jesuit has finished first locally dating back many years, and this year the Tigers outscored the runner-up local school by more than 80 points.

Playoff success across the spectrum of Jesuit athletics propelled the Tigers to the top of the heap statewide. Leading the way in 2023-24 were two State Champions, wrestling (head coach Sal Basile) and baseball (Miguel Menendez). It marked the 3rd State title for both Basile and Menendez at Jesuit.

The Tigers were State runners-up in 2023-24 in soccer (Eric Sims), and also earned Region titles in golf (David Simmons), swimming (Bill Shaffer), and tennis (Joe Curtis). All of the aforementioned teams earned District titles as well.

Three others captured District titles and were Region runners-up – football (Matt Thompson), lacrosse (Charlie Cummins), and track & field (Andy Wood ’92). Basketball (Neal Goldman) also earned the District title and advanced to the Region Semifinal, and cross country (Mike Phillips) won the District title for a second straight year.
