Artistic Accomplishment

Jesuit High School artist Quintin Hoggard ’18’s piece “In the Wood” was one of just 41 selected from among more than 500 submissions – including many from professional artists – for the Tampa Bay Lightning's prestigious Celebration of the Arts exhibition.

Hoggard also won a special award from the Lightning for “In the Wood,” as it was chosen one of three winners in the under-18 category. (There also were three overall winners chosen, and seven overall honorable mentions.)

The style of “In the Wood” is a mixture of drawing, etching, and pyrography, said Jesuit's Fine Arts Department Head, Kevin Ball '03. Hoggard used what is essentially an electric pen that produces an extremely hot tip to create an etch or a burn mark. It was completed on a one-inch slice of Basswood, which is typically used for this kind of art because of its softness. Line density changes occur with distance between the pen and the wood, and with the use of different tips.

Hoggard, who also is a member of the Jesuit soccer team, has accrued numerous awards for his artwork in the past year. At Jesuit’s Celebration of the Arts in the spring, Hoggard earned 1st Place in two categories, Edible Aesthetic and Touch of Color. And last fall, Hoggard was named the 1st Prize winner at the inaugural Youth Council Art Exhibition at the Tampa Museum of Arts. His charcoal drawing "Finding Light" was chosen Best in Show from among the 50 entries selected for that exhibition.
