For decades, Jesuit athletics has been recognized for its all-around excellence, and after the 2022-23 school year the Tigers once again have been recognized by the FHSAA for being No. 1 in Florida among all boys sports programs in all classifications!
This marks the second straight year Jesuit has been No. 1 in all of Florida, in the FHSAA’s all-sports rankings, a.k.a. The Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards. The Tigers, in Class 5A, scored 121 points in the FHSAA scoring system to finish slightly ahead of perennial all-sports power Jacksonville Bolles (4A, 119 points) and the state’s other Jesuit school, Miami Belen Jesuit (5A, 112.25 points).
It is the 4th time in 5 years Jesuit has been No. 1 overall among all boys sports programs in Florida, and the 5th time in 10 years. The Tigers have never finished lower than 6th overall in the state in that 10-year span.
Finishing first in all classifications also means the Tigers were No. 1 in Class 5A in 2022-23, as well as No. 1 among all local schools, public and private. Among schools in the Tampa Bay area (Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando Counties), Jesuit finished first among boys sports programs again, as it has for many years in a row, almost doubling the score of runners-up Plant (66 in 7A) and Calvary Christian (64 in 3A).
Propelling the Tigers to the top of the heap were numerous outstanding seasons by Jesuit’s 12 Varsity sports programs during the 2022-23 school year.
In the fall, the Tigers were State runner-up in swimming (head coach Bill Shaffer), earned their 5th straight Region crown in football (Matt Thompson), and claimed District titles in cross country (Mike Phillips) and golf (David Simmons).
In the winter, soccer (Eric Sims) earned the Region title for the 5th straight season, basketball (Neal Goldman) advanced to the Region Final, and wrestling (Sal Basile) placed 4th at the State Tournament with two individual State Champions, Roman Lermer ’24 and Draven McCall ’25.
In the spring, the Tigers were State runner-up in baseball (Miguel Menendez), and earned Region titles in lacrosse (Charlie Cummins) and track & field (Andy Wood ’92), and also reached the Region Final in tennis (Joe Curtis).
