Academic Team Champions

Jesuit High School's fall sports programs had outstanding seasons, with four advancing to State and the swimming team capturing its second consecutive State title, the first back-to-back championship ever by a Hillsborough County swimming program.

In the classroom they were equally impressive. Jesuit's fall sports teams, under the leadership of athletic director Terry Rupp '84, placed three teams in the Top 5 in their respective classifications in the FHSAA's Academic Team Champion (ATC) rankings, which are an average of the cumulative GPAs of all team members in that sport.

Swimming, under head coach Bill Shaffer, led the way, ranking No. 1 in Class 2A after finishing second the year before.

Football, under head coach Matt Thompson, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, marking the third straight year Jesuit football has ranked in the Top 2 after finishing No. 1 the previous two years.

Cross Country (head coach Jim Ranieri) placed 5th in 3A; golf (head coach David Simmons) was 14th in 2A; and bowling (head coach Ted Beil) placed 24th in the most competitive class in the state in any sport: all 200 FHSAA bowling schools are placed in a single classification.

Jesuit athletics has been the overall ATC champion for the past three years, earning 1st place among all Class 6A boys programs. Last year the Tigers accrued 71 points in the ATC scoring system to top 6A runners-up Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy, which had 62 points among its boys sports programs. After the fall 2018 sports season, Jesuit has 25 ATC points.

Cross country had the highest team GPA of Jesuit's teams this fall with a 3.771, followed by swimming (3.695), golf (3.501), bowling (3.350) and football (3.217).
