Academic Team Champions

Academic Team Champions

Jesuit High School's fall sports programs had outstanding seasons, with three advancing to State and the swimming team capturing its first State title, the first by any Hillsborough County swim program in 71 years.

In the classroom, the Jesuit teams, under the leadership of athletic director Terry Rupp '84 were just as impressive. Four of the five fall sports teams ranked in the Top 7 in their respective classifications in the FHSAA's Academic Team Champion (ATC) rankings, which are an average of the cumulative GPAs of all team members in that sport.

Football, under head coach Matt Thompson, led the way, ranking No. 1 in Class 5A. It is a repeat State title for Jesuit football, which ranked No. 1 in the ATC in 2016 as well.

Swimming (head coach Bill Shaffer) ranked No. 2 in Class 2A. Cross Country (head coach Jim Ranieri) placed 6th in 3A, golf (head coach Nico Hohman '07) was 7th in 2A, and bowling (head coach Ted Beil) placed 20th in the most competitive class in the state in any sport, as all 200 FHSAA bowling schools are placed in a single classification.

Overall, Jesuit's fall sports garnered 28 points in the ATC standings, most among all Class 6A boys sports programs. In fact, Jesuit is just seven points behind Riviera Beach Suncoast for the overall lead in Class 6A (boys and girls programs combined).

Cross country had the highest team GPA of Jesuit's fall sports teams with a 3.673, followed by swimming (3.609), golf (3.525), bowling (3.312) and football (3.163).
