- Six Sailing Tigers Compete in England!
June, 2009. Six members of Jesuit High School's Sailing Club traveled to England to compete in the British Schools Dinghy Racing Association (BSDRA) International Team Racing Championships. Our sailing team, composed of Jesuit Tigers J.T. Hansen '10, Zack Wilkie '10, David McCann '11, Mike Popp '11, Marcos Darcy '12 and Paul Perry '10, represented the United States in this event. There were 22 teams participating from the United Kingdom and Ireland. We team-raced in Fireflies, small boats that very maneuverable. The conditons were light and shifty. The wind was usually less than five knots with rare puffs up to ten. With temperatures in the high 70s to low 80s, it was sunny the entire time we were there. We sailed in the Bough Beach Reservoir in Kent.
During the first day, we got off to a rough start, losing the first race. We rallied back and won the next seven races. We were tied for first place going into the second day. On the second day we were sorted into fleets, and we were placed in the super gold fleet. Our first race was against SevenOaks, the team wiht whom we were tied. They handed us a loss and went on to win the regatta. Our second race went better, however, we were unable to regain our momentum. After a tough day, we finished 7th overall. It was a great experience and we look forward to other opportunities to compete at this level.
We would like to thank the ISSA for the opportunity to participate, as well as U.S. Sailing for providing a grant to help offset our costs. We would also like to thank Mr. Bruce Hebbert, commodore of the BSDRA, for his support and assistance. We would like to thank coaches Gonzalo Crivello, Mitch Hall and Sam Blouin '08 for their assistance in preparing us for the regatta. Finally, we would like to extend our gratitude to the Trapp family for providing accommodations and for their generous hospitality during our stay in the U.K. -- Paul Perry
