Alumnus Named as New Athletic Director
June 5, 2009 -- Former University of Maryland head baseball coach Terry Rupp will be Jesuit High School's new athletic director.
"As a Jesuit alumnus, Coach Rupp understands the mission of the school, and we are proud to welcome him back home," said Jesuit principal Joseph Sabin '66.
Coach Rupp is a 1984 graduate of Jesuit High School. He enjoyed a legendary prep athletic career, earning distinction as a Parade and McDonald's All-American in basketball and leading Jesuit to the 1984 Class 3A state championship. In 1989 he was inducted into the Jesuit High School Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 1994, he coached the Tigers' freshman basketball team to an undefeated season.
Before accepting the AD position at Jesuit, Coach Rupp had been the head baseball coach at the University of Maryland for eight years where he most recently led the team to a 30-win season for only the second time in school history.
Following his graduation from Jesuit, Coach Rupp was a stand-out two-sport athlete at the University of Tampa, graduating in 1988 with a B.S. degree in marketing. He was recognized as a two-time All-South Regional selection in baseball and played on UT baseball teams that made a pair of national championship appearances. He was also a two-time all-conference selection in basketball and a two-time conference All-Academic selection.
Coach Rupp later took over as head baseball coach for UT, leading the Spartans to a 215-80 (.729) record in five years, including four 40-win seasons. He guided the 1998 Spartans to the program's third national championship with an impressive 46-14 record, and was named National Coach of the Year. In 2006, he was inducted into the Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame.
