Community Service Policies
Hands-on Service: All students are required to work in a program or project that directly serves people in need with “hands-on” help. There are numerous ways in which people can be “needy.” In an attempt to be more faithful to the Ignatian values we hope to instill, we have defined five groups of “people in need.” Our students must work exclusively with these five groups, unless they have received approval to do otherwise directly from the Director of Community Service.
People in Need:
1. Poor, hungry, homeless persons
2. Sick, injured
3. Handicapped
4. Elderly, infirmed
5. Academically challenged
PLEASE NOTE: A student cannot gain community service hours for service to anyone in his family, even if the family member belongs to one of the five groups defined as “people in need.”
Service Hour Requirements: Completion of community service hours is mandatory and considered by Jesuit as part of the curriculum. Community Service hours are considered equally as important as the school’s academic requirements. Any senior who has not completed the 80-hour requirement by the set deadlines will not graduate. Any underclassman who has not completed his required hours will not be invited back for the following academic year at Jesuit High School.
Class Service Requirements:
Freshmen: 10 hours
Sophomores: 20 hours
Juniors: 40 hours
Seniors: 80 hours
PLEASE NOTE: Hours reported above the required number do NOT carry over to the next school year.
